According to the American Heart Association, about 5 million people are diagnosed with heart valve disease each year. Your heart has four valves and issues can get while one or more of the valves are not opening or closing properly. Read this helpful guide to learn all you need to know about valve disease.

How Do Heart Valves Work?

Your heart valves is located at the exit of each of your four heart chambers and hold one way blood flow through your heart. The four heart valves ensure that blood continually flows freely in a forward direction and that there may be no backward leakage. Blood flows out of your right and left atria into your ventricles via the open tricuspid and mitral valves. When the ventricles are complete, the tricuspid and mitral valves shut. This prevents blood from flowing backward into the atria at the same time as the ventricles contracts.

Types of Heart Valve Problems

Heart valves can have three basic kids of problems:

  • Regurgitation, or backflow, happens if a valve would not close tightly, inflicting blood to leak lower back into the chambers instead of flowing forward thru the heart or into an artery.
  • Stenosis occurs if the flaps of a valve thicken, stiffen, or fuse collectively, preventing the heart from fully opening and limiting blood flow via the valve.
  • Atresia occurs if the heart lacks an opening for blood to pass through.

What causes heart valve disease?

It's not always possible to tell what has caused your heart valve disease, but common causes include:

  • Being born with a damaged valve or valves (congenital heart disease)
  • Valve damage and scarring from rheumatic fever (rheumatic heart disease)
  • Ageing of the heart valves
  • A history of heart valve infection (endocarditis).

Symptoms of heart valve disease

A murmur is a sound that can occur when blood flows through a heart valve that doesn’t open or close properly. This is often one of the first signs of heart valve disease. Symptoms of heart valve disease can include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Severe swelling
  • Palpitations, rapid thumping or a pounding sensation in your chest
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting or light-headedness

If you experience any of these symptoms, please contact your doctor.

How Is Heart Valve Disease Treated?

Treatment for heart valve disease depends on the sort and severity of valve disease. The three main goals for treatment of heart valve are:   protecting your valve from additional damage; lessening signs; and repairing or replacing valves.

Different types of artificial heart valves

Two types of heart valves are available for people undergoing valve replacement surgery.

  • Biological valves are made from animal tissue and have the potential to wear out, especially in younger people.
  • Mechanical valves are made of metal and do not wear out, but require anticoagulation therapy (blood thinners) to help prevent blood clots.
